Engineering Solution

Glass Material Selection & Substitution

Compare glass families and supply alternatives using optical, thermal, mechanical, dimensional and machining requirements.

Engineering result: Compare named grades using optical, thermal, mechanical, chemical, supply-form and processing evidence before approving a replacement.

01 — Engineering Overview

Technical Content and Specifications

ANTGLASS provides glass material selection and grade substitution for precision windows, substrates, wafers, filters, sight glass, tubes and custom components. We compare the required function with named material grades, then supply and process the selected glass into finished parts.

Material selection is a commercial and engineering decision. The best grade must meet the optical, thermal, chemical, mechanical, electrical and dimensional requirements while remaining practical in the required thickness, size, surface condition, processing route and production quantity.

Common Grade Comparisons

  • N-BK7 vs K9/H-K9L: compare refractive index, Abbe number, thermal expansion, quality grade and manufacturer specification.
  • BOROFLOAT 33 vs PYREX SG3.3: compare official material data, supply form, thickness, surface condition and product requirements.
  • Fused silica vs fused quartz: compare raw-material route, UV performance, hydroxyl content, purity and intended wavelength.
  • ZERODUR vs ULE: compare low-expansion performance, size, thermal history, polishing and metrology application.
  • Germanium vs ZnSe: compare wavelength band, refractive index, thermal behavior, hardness, coating and environmental exposure.

Substitution and Validation Process

  1. Identify the current grade, reason for change and non-negotiable component functions.
  2. Rank optical, thermal, chemical, mechanical, electrical and commercial requirements.
  3. Compare official data for named candidate grades.
  4. Check available form, thickness, dimensions and compatibility with machining, polishing, cleaning, coating and bonding.
  5. Manufacture comparison samples or a first article when required.
  6. Approve the substitute material and record it on the drawing or controlled project specification.

ANTGLASS manufactures the selected material into precision optical windows, glass substrates, filter components, wafers, sight glass, discs, rings, tubes and custom-shaped precision parts. Material advice is connected directly to the finished product and manufacturing route.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can ANTGLASS recommend a glass material when the drawing has no grade?

Yes. Provide the wavelength, temperature, chemical exposure, dimensions, thickness, strength, electrical, coating, bonding and cost requirements. ANTGLASS selects suitable glass families and manufactures samples or finished components in the chosen grade.

Is K9 optical glass the same as N-BK7?

K9 and H-K9L are Chinese optical crown glasses with performance close to N-BK7, but they are not the same manufacturer grade. Refractive index, Abbe number, thermal expansion, quality grade and supply specification should be compared before substitution.

How are BOROFLOAT 33 and PYREX SG3.3 compared?

Both are borosilicate 3.3 materials used for heat and chemical resistance. The selection should compare the official grade data, sheet or stock form, thickness, optical quality, surface condition and the finished component requirements.

When should fused silica replace borosilicate glass?

Fused silica is selected when lower thermal expansion, higher-temperature capability, UV transmission, high purity or laser performance is more important. Borosilicate remains a strong choice for cost-effective industrial, laboratory and sensor components.

How is a substitute material approved for production?

ANTGLASS compares named grades, manufactures samples when required, inspects the finished component and records the approved material, drawing revision, process route and acceptance criteria before repeat production.
