ANTGLASS manufactures infrared optical windows for thermal imaging, gas detection, spectroscopy, night vision, pyrometry and IR laser systems.
Infrared materials are not interchangeable. Germanium, silicon, ZnSe, sapphire, CaF2 and chalcogenide glass cover different wavelength bands and have different hardness, thermal behavior, refractive index and environmental durability.
Product Types and Selection
| Material | Typical optical role | Selection focus |
|---|---|---|
| Germanium | MWIR/LWIR thermal imaging | High refractive index, temperature behavior and coating |
| ZnSe | Broad IR and CO2 laser windows | Transmission range, softness and coating protection |
| Sapphire | Hard protective window from visible into IR | Wear resistance and birefringence |
| Chalcogenide glass | Moldable and machined infrared optics | IR grade, thermal properties and environmental exposure |
Material Options
Material selection starts with the required SWIR, MWIR or LWIR band. Germanium and chalcogenide glass support many thermal-imaging systems; ZnSe is widely used in broad-band infrared and CO2 laser equipment; sapphire provides a hard, durable protective interface; CaF2 supports UV-to-IR applications.
Specifications to Put on the Drawing
- Required spectral band
- Detector or laser type
- Transmission and reflection requirement
- Operating temperature and thermal cycling
- Abrasion, humidity, chemicals or pressure
- AR or protective coating specification
ANTGLASS Manufacturing Capabilities
ANTGLASS supplies round, rectangular and custom infrared windows with precision contours, chamfers, holes, steps and mounting features. Surface generation, optical polishing, cleaning and coating-ready handling are matched to the material.
Inspection, Cleaning and Packaging
Inspection identifies the exact material grade, wavelength band, clear aperture, surface condition, dimensions, coating side and package orientation. Fragile or soft materials receive separated protective packaging.
Typical Applications
Infrared windows are used in thermal cameras, gas analyzers, surveillance, industrial sensors, pyrometers, CO2 laser systems and protected detector housings.
How to Select an Infrared Window Material
Start with the actual detector band rather than the broad label “infrared.” SWIR, MWIR and LWIR systems use different materials and coatings. Transmission at room temperature may also change with temperature, thickness and surface coating, especially for high-index materials.
Mechanical and environmental conditions often decide between materials that cover a similar band. Sapphire is hard and abrasion resistant. Germanium is widely used in thermal imaging but its optical properties are temperature sensitive. ZnSe is common in CO2 laser systems but is softer and requires careful handling. Chalcogenide glasses provide useful infrared transmission and design flexibility.
- Define the minimum transmission across the complete operating band.
- State detector temperature, external temperature and thermal cycling.
- Include humidity, salt, dust, abrasion, pressure and cleaning exposure.
- Specify coating band, durability and allowed spectral ripple.
- Identify whether the window is sacrificial, replaceable or permanently sealed.
ANTGLASS connects material selection with the finished geometry through its glass material selection and substitution service.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which materials are used for infrared optical windows?
Common infrared materials include germanium, silicon, zinc selenide, zinc sulfide, sapphire, calcium fluoride and chalcogenide glass. The correct choice depends on the SWIR, MWIR or LWIR band, temperature, strength, coating and budget.
What is the difference between germanium and ZnSe windows?
Germanium is widely used for mid-wave and long-wave thermal imaging and has a high refractive index. ZnSe offers a broader transmission range and is widely used in CO2 laser optics. Their hardness, thermal response, coating and environmental behavior differ.
Can ANTGLASS machine custom shapes in infrared materials?
Yes. ANTGLASS supplies round, rectangular and custom-profile infrared windows with precision edges, chamfers, holes, steps and mounting features according to the drawing and material.
Do infrared windows require a coating?
Many infrared materials have high surface reflection, so anti-reflection or protective coatings are commonly specified. The coating band, angle of incidence, environmental exposure and coating side should be defined.
What information is required for an IR window quotation?
Provide the wavelength band, detector or laser type, material, transmission requirement, dimensions, clear aperture, surface and flatness requirements, coating, environment and quantity.
